15 Best Hypoallergenic Deodorant Choices

There are a lot of hypoallergenic deodorant choices on the market that claim to be the best. Many of these “hypoallergenic,” deodorants either don’t work, or are NOT hypoallergenic. So, I did some research and found only the best non-allergy causing pit sticks that actually work.

During my research, I looked for EWG VERIFIED™ (safest) ingredients, analyzed real customer experiences, and reviewed any and all available research data.

If you’re looking for a deodorant that will ACTUALLY keep your underarms free of odor, without the burning, chemicals, and irritation, look no further.

What makes deodorant hypoallergenic?

a sign that has "aluminum Chloride" with a red "no" circle around it

Most deodorants are made with aluminum chloride, which is an irritant. Aluminum chloride is also a skin sensitizer, so it can cause an allergic reaction in some people. Typically, a deodorant that does not contain aluminum chloride is considered to be hypoallergenic.

Luckily, there are deodorants on the market that are made with hypoallergenic ingredients. Here are the ingredients that are typically found in the top-rated underarm care products.

Hypoallergenic Deodorant Ingredients

Hypoallergenic deodorant ingredients list infographic. The top hypoallergenic deodorants on the market typically contain one of these ingredients as their main ingredient. Arrowroot powder, baking soda, caprylic/capric triglyceride, coconut oil, cornstarch, shea butter, tapioca starch, witch hazel
  • Arrowroot powder (Maranta Arundinacea)
  • Baking soda
  • Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (coconut derived)
  • Coconut oil
  • Cornstarch
  • Shea butter
  • Tapioca Starch
  • Witch hazel

These ingredients tend to be gentler on the skin, and typically do not cause an allergic reaction like you would get from aluminum chloride. Additionally, these ingredients work well with absorbing and eliminating odors.

Can you develop an allergy to deodorant?

It is possible to develop an allergy to deodorant. However, this is rare. Usually, people who develop an allergy to a deodorant have an allergy to one or more of the ingredients in the deodorant. If you are concerned that you may have developed an allergy to deodorant, it is best to talk to your dermatologist, allergist, or medical provider.

This hypoallergenic deodorant is ideal for anyone who is sensitive to baking soda. The deodorant goes on smoothly and lasts all day (if you aren’t sweating too much). The dispenser could use a design upgrade, as it is hard to get the clear plastic protective cap out of the lid.

Everyone is talking about how great the scent (all genders) of the Prep U citrus mint is. Not one complaint! It works so well for some customers’ children, that the adults ended up switching too. Mild eczema and allergy sufferers both report that this is a deodorant they can use without having a flare-up. The application is rough in a cold environment and pulls at the skin.

As long as you keep the deodorant at room temp (or warmer), not many issues are reported. If you need a non-toxic, light-scented deodorant, this is worth a try.

Prep U deodorant can be bought at Target, Amazon, and the Prep U website.
